Today, on December 4th, 2020, the grand finale of the Women’s Kashmir Premier League (W-KPL) took place. The league, a first of its kind, was organized and administered by the renowned NGO Save Youth Save Future (SYSF). In the final match, Srinagar Warriors faced off against Baramulla Swingers, with Srinagar Warriors ultimately toppling Baramulla Swingers to lift the coveted W-KPL 2020 trophy.
It is important to note that six squads, comprising around 150 girls from across the valley, participated in W-KPL 2020, representing North, Central, and South Kashmir.
Besides the winner’s trophy, the champions were awarded a cash prize of ₹35,000, while the runners-up received ₹20,000. All other participating squads were awarded ₹8,000 each. Additionally, every player received a citation and a memento.
The finale was graced by Deputy GOC, Mr. Prashant Halgeri, who distributed prizes and citations to the players.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy GOC said,
“Our country will truly progress only when women are given their rightful due. Events like W-KPL, organized by SYSF in collaboration with the Indian Army, are important stepping stones in that direction.”
The Chairman of SYSF, Mr. Wajahat Farooq, expressed heartfelt gratitude to his team for meticulously and painstakingly organizing the W-KPL:
“Our team worked day and night to make W-KPL a reality. There were many challenges—
How could girls play cricket?
How could such a mega event be organized in the cold winter weather?
Who would support and sponsor this event?
Most importantly, who would root for women’s cricket in Kashmir?
But at SYSF, we decided to take the challenge head-on and get it done. You see, there is always a first.”
